Authorised (agreed) Absences

Only the school can authorise absence.

Please note that upon return to school, evidence may be requested for an absence to be authorised at the discretion of the Headteacher.

Absence may be authorised for the following reasons:

  • If a child is prevented from attending due to sickness. Parents/carers are asked to telephone the school before 9.30am on the first day of absence. Children should not return to school for 48 hours after the cessation of diarrhoea/sickness.

  • For religious observance as defined by the religious body to which the child belongs – 1 day only. For participation in approved public performance.

  • In situations where the school would reasonably exercise discretion to grant leave for example a funeral of a close relative – 1 day only.

Although parents and carers are asked to call the school to offer a reason for absence, only the school can authorise the absence.

Medical/dental appointments need to be arranged outside school hours. If this is not possible, the school will need to see a copy of the appointment card/evidence.

Even if a call or contact has been made to the school, an absence is unauthorised if there is no good and proper reason to explain it.

Unauthorised Absence

Unauthorised (not agreed) Absences

Absences may be recorded as unauthorised for the following reasons:

  • Truancy – a pupil is away from school without authority from the Headteacher. This includes parentally condoned absences.
  • Late arrival after registration is closed (unless the pupil or parent provides a legitimate reason or evidence for the absence.)
  • Any absence which the school has not been informed about, either by letter or telephone.
  • Staying at home to look after siblings or sick relatives.
  • Staying at home because their parents/carer is unwell.
  • Going shopping, to the airport to meet relatives or having a haircut etc.
  • A family holiday.
  • Attending appointments for family other members
  • An absence which is not evidenced.
