Road Safety Workshop - February 2016

Year 6 took part in a road safety workshop. The focus was on a crash in which an 11 year old boy was hit by a car. The play explored the events leading up to the crash for the boy and his best friend, who recently started secondary school. Year 6 were asked to become detectives in trying to establish who is to blame and solve the case.

Getting ready for Secondary School - Transition Day at LVHS

"I was a bit nervous about Secondary School but now I feel much more confident!" - Grace

Science - Forces
"We conducted lots of experiments to help us learn about forces. We had to find a way to increase air resistance to slow down a falling egg and stop it from cracking. This was tricky because some of the materials we were given would help us and some would not! We also made our own 'hoop-planes'. They do not look like normal paper planes but they are actually incredibly effective! Their shape reduces resistance and makes them more aero-dynamic" - Harvey

Science - Dissecting a Plant

"We learnt about the different parts a plant has. Some parts help it to create food, like the roots and stem whereas other parts are reproductive and help to make seeds, like the stamen and stigma. We had to prove we had understood what each plant was by dissecting it, organising it on a grid and explaining what its role was." - Chris

Sikhism - The Langar

"We have been learning about the different parts of a Sikh Gurdwara (temple). We were really interested in their Langar, or food hall. Did you know that everyone, no matter which religion, race or gender, is invited to join Sikhs in their Langar? The food is donated by local Sikhs and they all help to serve and look after each other. We created our own 'Langar' and helped to serve food to our classmates. We realised we were also demonstrating many of our school values, such as kindness when speaking to each other and teamwork by organising our Langar. We then visited a local Gurdwara to see what it was like first-hand. We had a brilliant time!" - Ronan

DT - Warhorse Sculpture

"In Y5 Olive we have been making a giant warhorse sculpture with Mrs Green. It took us a month to do it and making our sculpture was so much fun! To make it, we had to use papier-mâché before painting it and adding poppies as a finishing touch. Our poppies represent soldiers who died during WW1" - Frankie-Leigh, Keanu & Amani

WW1 Home-Learning Projects

"Year 5's topic in Autumn Term is World War One. We were given a homework task to find out as much information as we could about WW1 then come and share something interesting we found out with our class. As you can see, we brought back lots of amazing projects including our own topic books, PowerPoint presentations, hand-made models of the Tower of London, the Cenotaph, WW1 Planes, the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior and even a life-size cardboard girl with a WW1 costume! Why not have a look at them?" - Kieran

World War 1 Day

"On Monday 29th September we went on our superb school trip to London. We saw the amazing Cenotaph at Westminster. After that, we visited the 'Tomb of the Unknown Warrior' in Westminster Abbey. I was absolutely mesmerised by it!" - Mert

"First, we went to the huge Cenotaph ( a memorial to people who have died in wars). It was awesome to see. After we went to Westminster Abbey which was really quiet and respectful. We found out about the 'Tomb of the Unknown Warrior' and how he represents all of the people who did not come back from war. Finally, we saw the Poppy Art Installation at the Tower of London. Did you know there are 888,236 poppies there? Each one is for a person who died during World War One" - Volkan

Non Chronological Reports

Miss Cipriani and Miss Cannon taught us about non-chronological reports, like the ones you see in topic books in the library. However, the reports they gave us were all muddled up! In groups of 3 we had to piece each part of the report back together like detectives! We learnt that non-chronological reports have lots of important features such as: a heading, subheadings, topic sentence, diagrams, technical language and connectives. - Tillie
