Our Learning Mentor
My name is Lesley Simmons and I am the Learning Mentor at Capel Manor.
My role is to mentor and support the children in school to help them find strategies to cope with any emotional challenges they are facing. Children often benefit from talking to a trusted adult who is not directly involved in their day-to-day lives.
Through 1:1 sessions or small group work, together we tackle issues such as:
- Low self-esteem or confidence
- Friendship difficulties
- Transition to a new class or moving on to secondary school
- Dealing with anger
- Bereavement or other loss
- Family breakdown
- Lack of resilience
- Any other emotional challenge that might be a barrier to learning
Sessions can vary from a one off drop-in to regular scheduled appointments over a short or longer period of time and are tailored to the children and their individual needs.
I use a solution focussed approach in talking with the children and often engage them in play or creative activities to foster a relaxed environment.
Children can self-refer to me by just popping in to my room or using our ‘Time to Talk’ boxes around the school to make contact.
Teachers will also refer a child to me if they identify that a child has an emotional need or challenge. Finally, you as parents are also encouraged to refer your child to me if you feel that they would benefit from some extra support or just a listening ear at school. Please do not hesitate to contact me via the school office or call me direct on 01992 654067.
